Organizational Excellence
We build continuous improvement into everything we do.
This year, we received recognition from outside organizations and listened to our team members about where we are leaders in our sector and where we can improve.
Highlights from 2025-26
Sustained recognition for workplace excellence
In 2025, our PCN was recognized for our commitment to creating a safe, supportive, and exceptional workplace, receiving two major honours:
- Canada’s Safest Employers: We were named an Excellence Awardee in the category of Canada’s Safest Non-Profit Employer, recognizing our strong culture of health, safety, and well-being.
- Alberta’s Top Employers: We were selected as one of Alberta’s Top Employers for 2026, celebrating our ongoing commitment to employee support, innovation, and continuous improvement in creating an exceptional workplace.
These recognitions reflect the dedication of our entire team and our shared commitment to fostering a safe, inclusive, and rewarding workplace.
Focus group sessions
and insights
Building on the results of the Employee Engagement Survey, our PCN hosted a series of virtual focus groups in July 2025, facilitated by the Employee Advisory Council (EAC). These sessions provided an opportunity for team members to share deeper insights and perspectives behind the survey data.
Team members expressed pride in working at our PCN and highlighted the organization’s supportive culture, collaborative teams, and commitment to innovation in patient care. Participants also identified opportunities to strengthen communication, streamline information across channels, improve cross-team connection in a hybrid work environment, and evolve the performance feedback process to include more timely and ongoing conversations.
The feedback gathered through these focus groups continues to inform improvements across the organization and ensures team members’ perspectives remain central to decision-making.
Diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging: A safe, equitable, and welcoming workplace
In September 2025, our PCN established a Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) Steering Committee, dedicated to advancing initiatives that support an inclusive and respectful environment for employees and patients alike.
The committee has begun leading several initiatives to strengthen employee experience and promote a culture where everyone feels valued and supported, including:
- Wellness room: Exploring the creation of a dedicated space for team members to rest, recharge, and support their well-being during the workday.
- Clinic walk-through: Conducting an accessibility-focused review of our clinic, the Primary Care Centre, engaging patients, team members, and community partners to identify opportunities to improve inclusion and patient experience in clinical spaces.
- Community engagement exploration: Identifying organizations and initiatives that align with our DEIB values and exploring opportunities for meaningful engagement and support.
- Training needs assessment: Assessing learning opportunities to strengthen understanding of DEIB concepts across the organization, supporting both employee experience and patient care.
To further support this work, our PCN provided several learning opportunities for staff in 2025-26, including:
- DEIB Foundations for all staff
- Inclusive Leadership for all people leaders
- Unconscious Bias and Inclusive Hiring for people leaders, those involved in hiring, and Human Resources
Listening to our people: Employee Engagement Survey
Our annual employee survey, conducted by an external consulting firm, offers valuable insights into our employees’ engagement.
This survey acts as our compass, giving us a better understanding of how team members feel about the work environment so we can use it as a guide to continuously improve.
From the 2025-26 survey, we learned:
were moderately or highly engaged
agreed or strongly agreed that their manager supports their growth and development
agreed or strongly agreed that they were satisfied with their work-life balance
were satisfied or very satisfied with the team environment they have at our PCN
agree or strongly agree that there is a culture of inclusion where all voices are heard and considered
feel there is a positive and productive culture where they work
are satisfied or very satisfied with their reporting relationship with their manager
Acting on feedback
Following the engagement survey and focus group sessions, our PCN developed an action plan to address key themes identified by team members.
Several improvements have already been implemented. The annual performance review process was simplified to include clearer guidance and additional time for completion. Communication practices were refined through improvements to our internal e-newsletter, clearer introductions during all-hands meetings, and improved guidance for new staff using intranet notifications.
Additional initiatives are underway to further streamline communications, clarify internal processes, and strengthen opportunities for cross-team collaboration. By listening to feedback and taking meaningful action, our PCN continues to foster a workplace culture built on transparency, engagement, and continuous improvement.
Throughout 2025-26, our PCN:
Delivered full banker-function support to the Calgary Zone Business Unit across accounting, financial reporting, budgeting, and contract management.
Implemented new platforms to strengthen cybersecurity protections and enhance IT service support, helping ensure secure and reliable systems across the organization.
Physicians at our PCN’s clinic and the Mosaic, and Foothills PCNs’ access clinics were formally onboarded to the Calgary Zone PCN Access Clinics Clinical ARP. Payments under the ARP commenced in September 2025. Foundational governance and operational processes were established to support long-term sustainability and reporting requirements.
Accreditation Canada confirmed that our May 2025 follow-up evidence submission met all requirements, allowing our PCN to maintain Accreditation with Commendation status. This recognition reflects our ongoing commitment to quality, patient safety, and continuous improvement as we prepare for the next on-site survey in 2028.
Launched a comprehensive team member well-being strategy supporting five dimensions of well-being: Physical, mental, social, financial, and intellectual. A new Employee Well-being Hub on our internal intranet provides staff with centralized access to resources, tools, and supports to help them thrive at work.
Led the transition of Power Apps data to Microsoft Dataverse, improving data integrity, security, scalability, and integration across the Microsoft 365 platform. In partnership with our Patient’s Medical Home team, our PCN also developed the Patient Encounter Tracker Power App and Power BI dashboard to support consistent, up-to-date encounter documentation and performance monitoring.
- Certificate of Recognition (COR) safety audit: Each year, our PCN voluntarily undergoes an external COR safety audit of our Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) program. In May 2025, we achieved an audit score of 98 per cent. The OHS Committee reviewed the results and developed an action plan to further strengthen our safety program.
- Unexpected outcomes (disclosure of harm) training: 13 clinical leads, managers, and members of the Corporate Governance team participated in Communicating Unexpected Outcomes training through Alberta Health Services. The training provided insight into the patient and family experience following unexpected outcomes, including those resulting from errors in care, and supported compassionate and transparent communication with patients and families.
In 2025-26, the Patient Advisory Council continued to play an important role in ensuring patient perspectives inform the PCN’s programs, communications, and quality improvement efforts:
- Enhancing the Patient Experience Survey and improving patient-facing communications
- Supporting development of the Patient Engagement Framework, with a focus on accessibility and equity
- Informing updates to the Quality Improvement and Safety Framework, reinforcing the importance of respectful, patient-centred care
- Contributing to initiatives that improve clinic accessibility and patient experience
