Organizational Excellence
We build continuous improvement into everything we do.
This year, we received recognition from outside organizations and listened to our employees about where we are leaders in our sector and where we can improve.
Highlights from 2023-24
Reaching for the top: Ongoing focus on physical and mental safety
In a year dedicated to health and safety, our PCN was honoured at the Canada’s Safest Employers Awards, where our PCN was recognized as a:
- Canada’s Safest Public Sector/Non-Profit Employer 2023 excellence awardee
- Best Wellness Program 2023 excellence awardee
This dual recognition reflects our unwavering commitment to creating a workplace that focuses on employees’ overall well-being.
A panel of 23 judges evaluates employers from across Canada who are recognized for their achievements, leadership, and innovation in health and safety to determine the winners of Canada’s Safest Employers Awards.
Championing workplace excellence through occupational health and safety (OHS)

We enhanced our OHS management system, ensuring it not only meets but exceeds legislative requirements. Our efforts aim to meet the standards of excellence outlined by Accreditation Canada and the Certificate of Recognition (COR) safety audit program.

We fortified our emergency response plans and curated an extensive resource list, providing easy access to legislation, guides, and best practices.

Our participation in an annual COR audit is not just a procedure — it’s a reaffirmation of our dedication to the safety of our staff. Achieving COR was a milestone that underscored our PCN’s commitment to OHS. Now that it has been achieved, we will be maintaining it through annual audits.

Regular OHS reminders, updates, and refresher sessions are more than just an action. They foster a culture where safety is ingrained into every action and address 12 critical topics that are the cornerstone of our OHS strategy.
Alberta’s best: a year of setting the standard
Our PCN proudly stood out as one of Alberta’s Top Employers for 2024, a testament to our commitment to excellence. This accolade is part of an annual competition that spotlights employers across the province that lead their industries in offering exceptional places to work.
Winners are selected by the editors of Canada’s Top 100 Employers who assess contending employers on eight criteria. Ultimately, the panel compares the results to determine which organizations offer the most progressive and forward-thinking programs in their respective fields.
Throughout 2023-24, our PCN:

We revitalized our Employee Advisory Council, bringing employee insights directly into our strategic roadmap. Council members are empowered to act as champions for their teams, and by serving as pivotal connectors, they foster a culture of collaboration.

Participation in a Land Acknowledgement workshop underscored our dedication to reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples. This initiative built upon our foundational knowledge from our Truth, Reconciliation, and Our Path Forward session in 2023.

Began a multi-year initiative to develop a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion action plan and put it into action. This plan is part of a multi-faceted effort to create a more inclusive and welcoming environment for all employees.

A transition to a new health and wellness benefits plan marked a significant upgrade to our total rewards package, prioritizing the well-being of our staff. This enhanced plan offers superior benefits and quicker service at a reduced price point.

Our eHealthcare Leadership award in the Best Email Content Series category for Wellness Watch, a monthly e-newsletter, underscores our commitment to providing timely wellness-related support. Wellness Watch shares curated sources of wellness support and resources with the doctors in our membership.

Developed and began a multi-year leadership and management training and development program to enhance our leadership’s soft and technical skills across all areas of a managerial role.
Listening to our workforce
Our annual employee survey, conducted by external consultant Stone-Olafson, offers valuable insights into our employees’ engagement.
This survey acts as our compass, giving us a better understanding of how team members feel about the work environment so we can use it as a guide to continuously improve.
From the 2023 survey, we learned:
were moderately or highly engaged
agreed or strongly agreed that their manager supports their growth and development
agreed or strongly agreed that they were satisfied with their work-life balance
feel there is a positive and productive culture where they work
were satisfied or very satisfied with the team environment they have at our PCN
